Recognition

Filed under: Blue Diamond! — Raja @ 10:16 AM

It feels, over and over again, like the best recognition I may ever get,

Even when you are crying (even that is so cute!), and you see me suddenly – you beam, tears still sparkling on your cherry cheeks

Even when you are busy at work (trying to grab your mom’s pendant), and you see me – there appears an impish grin on your face

Even when you are crawling towards a forbidden thing (like the fireplace) and I pick you up – you have a shy giggle (Oh! you got me again!)

When I pull up my car on the driveway in the evening, and see you two waiting for me, and your faces light up – that lights up my life

And ………….. even in your sleep, when I caress your hair, you always have a hint of a smile (both of you do 🙂 )

Returning Home

Filed under: Blue Diamond! — Raja @ 2:15 PM

I come back home every day to a hero’s welcome.

The unbound joy, the slow and unsteady crawl towards me – falling and getting up but not losing focus, and the two bright eyes glowing in the expectation of a hug

The tiny hands touch my cheek. The four cute little teeth nibble on my shirt.

And the most soothing gibberish that anyone has ever heard

I feel blessed 🙂

Words

Filed under: Blue Diamond! — Raja @ 1:52 PM

My life is now full of words that do not mean anything, but make all the sense in the world.

Those words (or a spontaneous and exceedingly sweet attempt at making words) are like little fluffy clouds. I make my own shapes out of them. None of them is right or wrong or even meaningful. But they make my days worthwhile 🙂

A FATHER IS BORN

Filed under: Blue Diamond! — Raja @ 1:18 PM

There is nothing more beautiful than those tiny hands and feet of yours, and nothing more reassuring than the confused look in your wide eyes!

We talk among ourselves. You know we do – your mother, you and I. There is so much to talk about. You have your own stories of the cozy world you had been a part of for nine months – how it was perfectly warm and no bell had to be sounded when you needed food, and how, fairly often, the whole world shook hysterically (actually, that was your mom laughing at my silly jokes!). We have stories of our world – the world that we three will now share with so many others. Our world has a lot more stories – a lot more complex and a lot more confusing stories. There are stories about our past, and about our dreams. Stories about family, society, languages, cultures, love, wars, evolution, creation ……….. and things beyond. We will flip through the pages together.

I had always thought I would teach you the right things; show you the right way. How I would love to guide you to the truth! And write stories on my own for you to get to know the world.

Now, as you came into this world, so did I. And it’s a sweet paradox out here – where life must feed on death and vision is but blind faith. Right and wrong are but mirage of the same fallacious truth!

What was the path I took to this bliss – an undreamably beautiful wife, the cutest little baby boy, the most caring parents and relatives, and the very best of friends? I wish I knew. I cannot promise you any answer, but you can take my word for it that I will be with you, whatever path we all choose to tread on. We will explore it together. As we float in this infinite expanse of nowhere and nothing, you will always be anchored to us.

As you came to our world, I am born. As a father.

For all Indian husbands ………

Never agree with your wife when she says that a lady (other than herself) is beautiful!

Sincerely yours,

The Musical Half

Pandit Prasun Banerjee was one of the foremost disciples of Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, and was hailed as the torchbearer of the Patiala-Kasur Gayaki immortalized by Ustaadji. It was the Ustaad’s personal wish to teach Prasun, and the result was the so-called “Prasun-flavour“. To listeners, it was more of a new ‘ang’, bearing a touch of silken and fine, and those who heard it once could not forget it for the rest of their lives.

More songs of Pandit Prasun Banerjee.
About the gharana.
Meera Banerjee (Chatterjee) was the empress of Patiala Gayaki. Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan had said that, “when Meera sang, it was pristinely pure as the very soul of all creations.” At a mere age of thirteen, she was selected by the A.I.R, and by the middle of 1950’s, several of her discs came out, becoming immensely popular. She toured several European countries as a member of the cultural delegation sent by the Government of India in 1954. Her glorious performances abroad were honoured in India by the President and the Prime Minister through a special ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
I am fortunate to have met her, and look forward for more whenever I visit home.Song by Meera Banerjee.

Parthosarothy is one of the finest musicians in India embodying the true heritage of Hindustani raagadri music. He is among the dearest students of Pandit Ravi Shankar. BBC mentions him as one of the most gifted musicians playing today. I was lucky to play host to him during June-09.http://www.youtube.com/p/759E2E88E7AC8491&hl=
