  3. Nice article but there is a mistake, in the muscle development section you said “the study had been conducted using an “adult African lion (magnificent specimen)” weighing 182 kg and a “Bengal tiger (magnificent specimen)” weighing 276 kg.” Could you please tell me from where you got these weight figures? The author of the study only mentioned that he used “magnificent specimens” and didn’t stated their exact weights. I’m afraid you wrongly took the weights of the muscles in ounces from the results as their body weights in kilograms. From the source the tiger and lion had muscle weights of 276 and 182 ounces respectively. Cheers, Bigcat82

  4. Excellent article, even if some passages sound a bit biased towards the tiger, but overall it is a good read and most of the claims sound plausible and logical.

Perhaps this study about the meaning of the lion’s mane is also for use http://www.cbs.umn.edu/sites/default/files/public/downloads/Wounding_mortality_and_mane_morphology-West_et_al.pdf

It has interesting statistics and clears up some old fashioned clichés. Most interesting part is on the last page:

“Our results suggest that the current protective benefits
of the mane are minimal, but they do not exclude the
possibility of past protective benefits. Forehead manes
may have initially evolved as protection and later taken
on a signalling function that led to the mane’s exagger-
ation. It is also possible that the entire mane evolved
initially as protection, but that lion fighting behaviour
subsequently changed. Studies of fighting behaviour in
other felids, particularly the lion’s closest relative, the
    P. tigris
, may provide a better basis for comparison; if
tigers target the shoulders, necks and chests along with
the forehead, or if injuries to these areas also cause high
mortality, the necessity for protection to these areas would
be supported. Tigers and other maneless felids might also
have protective dermal shields; if so, the location of these
shields should provide clues about the areas most in need
of protection. Regardless of the lion mane’s original func-
tion, protective benefits are not sufficient to explain the
maintenance of the trait; rather, the key benefit of the
mane appears to derive from its function as a signal of
    male condition.”

    • Thanks for the link. I have added it in the post. However, in my personal opinion, this is not a logically sound study. I agree with the conclusion, but do not agree with the logical reasoning for the conclusions drawn.

I found a site where numberles lions’ victories over tigers are cited, challenging your general attitude (and citations). Please go to The Straight Dope (fighting ignorance from 1973). Waiting for your comment. Aki
